Sheet Metal Press Forming 101

sheet metal press formingToday we wanted to share a basic guide with those looking into sheet metal press forming so that you can better understand what it is a full-service sheet metal fabricator does.

Whether you are looking for inspiration or require custom sheet metal work, here's what you need to know about metal fabrication 101.

What Is Sheet Metal Press Forming?

Simply put, sheet metal press forming (or metal fabrication) is the process associated with burning, cutting, or welding sheet metal. In this case, the goal is to form a specific shape while maintaining the overall quality and strength of the metal itself.

Typically, when the material (i.e. steel or aluminum) has a thickness that is less than 6.35 mm, it is referred to a sheet. Any thicker, and it's referred to as a plate. Aluminum sheet may be used for:

  • Auto manufacturing
  • Appliances
  • Roofing

While this process may seem straightforward, sheet metal has many characteristics that are of great importance when aiming to bend, form, punch, emboss, etc. This type of knowledge is imperative when forming various shapes -- especially in terms of the appropriate amounts of force required.

Once the calculated force is applied, sheet metal will be modified, but should not fail. In turn, this allows your fabricator to make a range of complex shapes using a range of methods. In that sense, the methods and processes we use are based on the desired outcome.

Whether bending sheet metal or utilizing the process known as roll forming, sheet metal fabricators are able to make everything from locomotives to laboratory furniture. Based on the tools and level of experience the vendor possess, it may also be able to engineer and manufacturer custom products of a wide variety.

More on Custom Sheet Metal Forming

Many custom sheet metal manufacturers specialize in certain industries. (For example, Blackstone specializes in the industrial, transportation, military, and scientific sectors, though our capabilities go beyond these.) Just some of the services a full-service custom fabricator offers include:

  • Sheet metal rolling
  • Press braking
  • Sheet metal bending
  • Sheet metal stamping

If you want to find a vendor who specializes in custom work, look for one whose press room can accommodate any project -- regardless of scope or required dimensions.
